'Within The Shadow', the opening track on 'Upon Your Shore', is one of my 'Spurgeon Songs'. I love Spurgeon - his writings have encouraged me over the many years, and every now and then I can't help but want to put into lyric his amazing prose.

And so it is with 'Within The Shadow'. The song lyrics are inspired from both the May 22, Morning and April 10, Evening devotions found in Spurgeon's 'Morning & Evening' Devotional.

"He led them forth by the right way.” Psalm 107:7

Changeful experience often leads the anxious believer to inquire "Why is it thus with me?" I looked for light, but lo, darkness came; for peace, but behold, trouble. I said in my heart, my mountain standeth firm; I shall never be moved. Lord, thou dost hide thy face, and I am troubled. I was but yesterday that I could read my title clear, today my evidences are bedimmed, and my hopes are clouded. Yesterday, I could climb to Pisgah's top, and view the landscape o'er, and rejoice with confidence in my future inheritance; today, my spirit has no hopes, but many fears; no joys, but much distress. Is this part of God's plan with me? Can this be the way in which God would bring me to heaven? Yes, it is even so. The eclipse of your faith, the darkness of your mind, the fainting of your hope, all these things are but parts of God's method of making you ripe for the great inheritance upon which you shall soon enter. These trials are for the testing and strengthening of your faith - they are waves that wash you further upon the rock - they are winds which waft your ship the more swiftly towards the desired haven. According to David's words, so it might be said of you, "So he bringeth them to their desired haven." By honour and dishonour, by evil report and by good report, by plenty and by poverty, by joy and by distress, by persecution, and by peace, by all these things is the life of your souls maintained, and by each of these are you helped on your way. Oh, think not, believer, that your sorrows are out of God's plan; they are necessary parts of it. "We must, through much tribulation, enter the kingdom." Learn, then, even to "count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations."

O let my trembling soul be still
And wait thy wise, thy holy will!
I cannot, Lord, thy purpose see
Yet all is well since ruled by Thee

"For there stood by me this night the angel of God." Acts 27:23

Tempest and long darkness, coupled with imminent risk of shipwreck, had brought the crew of the vessel into a sad case; one man alone among them remained perfectly calm, and by his word the rest were reassured. Paul was the only man who had heart enough to say, "Sirs, be of good cheer." There were veteran Roman legionaries on board, and brave old mariners, and yet their poor Jewish prisoner had more spirit than they all. He had a secret Friend who kept his courage up. The Lord Jesus despatched a heavenly messenger to whisper words of consolation in the ear of his faithful servant; therefore he wore a shining countenance, and spake like a man at ease.

If we fear the Lord, we may look for timely interpositions when our case is at its worst. Angels are not kept from us by storms, or hindered by darkness. Seraphs think it no humiliation to visit the poorest of the heavenly family. If angel's visits are few and far between at ordinary times, they shall be frequent in our nights of tempest and tossing. Friends may drop from us when we are under pressure, but our intercourse with the inhabitants of the angelic world shall be more abundant; and in the strength of love-words, brought to us from the throne by the way of Jacob's ladder, we shall be strong to do exploits. Dear reader, is this an hour of distress with you? then ask for peculiar help. Jesus is the angel of the covenant, and if his presence be now earnestly sought, it will not be denied. What that presence brings in heart-cheer those remember who, like Paul, have had the angel of God standing by them in a night of storm, when anchors would no longer hold, and rocks were nigh.

"O angel of my God, be near,
Amid the darkness hush my fear;
Loud roars the wild tempestuous sea,
Thy presence, Lord, shall comfort me."

Lyrics

Within The Shadow

O Angel of my God, be near
Amid the darkness hush my gripping fear
Loud roars, the wild tempestuous sea..
Thy presence, Lord, shall ever comfort me

Is it not You who calmed the raging sea
The one who was and is and is eternally
My soul, be still - the Lord is on your side
My refuge, and my God
I safely will abide
Within the Shadow of Your Wings

O let my trembling soul be still
And wait Thy wise, Thy perfect Holy will
I cannot, Lord, Thy purpose see
Yet all is well, for I am ruled by Thee

And when the day has pressed to take its toll
To You I'll run, and say it is well with my soul
‘Be still my soul, the Lord is on your side’
My refuge and my God, I safely will abide
Within the Shadow of Your wings…

These trials are for the testing and the strengthening of your faith
By which He brings you to your haven
Have mercy, O God - to You I cry
Until the storms pass by
My soul takes refuge in the shadow....
Within the Shadow of Your wings
